Synopsis
The first module will focus on the teaching of reading. Knowledge
about emergent literacy, decoding and comprehension will be presented
in the context of historical and contemporary theories about the
teaching of reading; skills approaches, whole language approaches and
social critical approaches.
The second module will focus on the development and acquisition of
writing abilities and the associated skills of spelling, handwriting,
punctuation and grammar. Once again this knowledge will be presented
in the context of historical and contemporary theories about the
teaching of writing; language experience, the writing process and
genre approaches.
The third module will focus on similarities and difference in the
reading and writing processes and the implications of these for
teaching literacy across the curriculum. Appropriate strategies for
the teaching of research skills and reading writing in the content
areas will be addressed.
