SYNOPSIS:

This is the second of two units which address, in a generic sense, the
practice of professional engineering and professional surveying.  Like
unit 70061 this unit is concerned with aspects of the work undertaken,
the  performance  required  and  the  responsibilities  borne  by  the
professional engineer and professional surveyor which are  essentially
independent  of the engineering or surveying discipline:  to  a  large
extent these are non-technical matters. As the final practice unit  in
the  Bachelor  of Engineering and Bachelor of Surveying  degrees  this
unit  is  particularly concerned with interaction with the professions
at large.

A  major  part of all engineering and surveying project  work  is  the
appropriate communication of the outcome. This is the major  topic  of
this  unit  and  provides  guidance  and  experience  in  both  verbal
(seminar) and written (thesis) reporting skills. Hence this unit is to
be  undertaken to complement the unit 70712 Project and in  the  final
year  of  the Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Surveying degree.
The  presentation of a major seminar on the work undertaken during the
final-year project is a requirement for the completion of this unit.

OBJECTIVES:

On successful completion of this unit students will be able
to:

1. plan and present a substantial technical seminar in an
   appropriate professional manner;
   
2. make effective use of presentation aids, both manual and with
   software-assistance;
   
3. debate technical matters in a professional forum;
   
4. present, analyse and discuss technical information using the
   vehicle of an academic dissertation;
   
5. appreciate the qualities which distinguish the academic
   dissertation from the engineering / surveying technical
   report;
   
6. recognise and debate the strengths and limitations of the
   academic component of the education of a professional engineer
   /surveyor.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

1    A  student will not normally be undertake this unit until  he/she
     is in the last two (2) semesters of the degree course.
2    The  grades awarded in this unit are normally either Pass (P)  or
     Incomplete (I).
3    Achievement of a `pass' grade in this practice unit requires each
     of:
     (i)   satisfactory participation in the "First Seminar" program
           (Topic 2 above);
     (ii)  satisfactory participation in and presentation at the
           Project Conference (Assessment 3 above); and
     (iii) participation in the Exit Interview/Debate (Topic 5 above).
4    A  student  who  does not participate adequately  in  the  "First
     Seminar"  program (Topic 2 above) will normally  be  required  to
     attend  and  provide  a  written report on  three  (3)  technical
     seminars  or equivalent professional meetings to the satisfaction
     of the Examiner.
5    To  be  eligible to present at the Project Conference  a  student
     must have both:
     (i)   given a satisfactory First Seminar, and
     (ii)  provided a satisfactory Extended Abstract in the required
           format by the due date (Assessment 1).
6    This  unit  will  normally require attendance  at  a  residential
     school  to complete Topics 1, 3, 5, 6 and 7. Topics 2 and 4  will
     take place during semester time.
7    Students  are  to  retain a verbatim copy of all assignment  work
     submitted, for submission in the event that the original is  lost
     or damaged.
8    This  is a COMMUNICATION BENCHMARK unit and a major component  of
     the   assessment  of  this  unit  will  be  associated  with  the
     demonstration of communication skills.
9    A  minimum  standard of communication skills must be demonstrated
     in order for a passing grade to be achieved.
