All primary school teachers are health educators and teachers of human relationships education during school hours when children are under their care. Not only must they ensure a healthful school environment for all pupils, but they must also provide children with the understanding of concepts, issues and practices which are basic to the development and maintenance of good health. It is a requirement that HRE be part of schooling in all Queensland state schools from preschool to grade 12. HRE is the basis of all learning, is part of all experiences and interactions and is the foundation on which a supportive school environment develops. With the philosophy and approach to learning focused on cooperative, child centred classrooms operating under social justice principles, it is imperative that teachers develop skills and a greater depth of understanding in the area of human relationships.
This unit focuses on health and human relationships education in the primary school. Students will gain an understanding of curriculum development and current teaching approaches associated with both areas. Increased self-awareness and personal reflection within the content areas will assist in the development of skills that enhance teaching effectiveness.
