Synopsis

The unit is subdivided into practice modules covering aspects of Soil
Mechanics, Hydraulics, Geology and Surveying. Practice requirements
for each module include testing and experimental work and field
excursions in a team environment, and the preparation of individual
reports on these practice activities. Students will be required to
carry out soil tests to Australian standards to gauge various
engineering properties of soils. Laboratory sessions in hydraulics
provide for better understanding of relevant theory and calibration
techniques for flow measuring devices through hands on experience.
Practical sessions in surveying are designed to develop the manual and
analytical skills required to conduct simple levelling, chaining and
theodolite traverses. The field excursion provides the student with
specialised instruction on the identification and the engineering
significance of geological features.
