Synopsis
This unit explores a number of major social trends and the
consequences of these for education. It also provides opportunities
for students to engage a number of current emphases within education
which are seen as responses to the changing nature of community in the
late 20th century. Basic features of postmodernism and postcolonialism
are introduced and used as analytical windows through which education
as a social agency is investigated. Students will also come to
understand something of the basic ideas of a number of influential
writers in this field such as Henry Giroux, Peter McLaren, Paulo
Freire, Christine Sleeter and Nancy Fraser.
