Synopsis

This unit focuses on the range of students with special needs in
primary classrooms. Characteristics of such students, their
teaching/learning and adjustment needs will be addressed along with
practical, research-based methods and strategies for meeting their
academic, social and emotional needs. The unit will be embedded within
a framework of current educational philosophy and policies pertinent
to students with special needs.

This unit is designed to build on knowledge and experience acquired in
previous units. Thus, the preservice teacher will be expected to
further develop and to apply their teaching skills to support and meet
the specific special needs of individuals and groups of students
within regular primary classrooms. The school experience component of
this unit will require students to work with children with special
needs in a structured school experience, and in a school setting
selected by the student. A limited number of practicum placements may
be available in special schools or special education units.

In addition all students must complete the set requirements for
Community Field Studies.
