This unit covers:

Introduction:  What is language? The various components  of  language:
the  sounds  of  language (phonetics) the sound patterns  of  language
(phonology)   the   meanings  of  language   (morphology,   semantics,
pragmatics) the sentence patterns of language (syntax) the meanings of
language at discourse level Language varieties and Language in society
and culture.

What  are  the  issues in learning and teaching second  languages  for
second  language  acquisition  (SLA)? Differences  between  first  and
second  language learning; role of errors in second language learning;
the  route  in development of learning a second language;.  individual
differences and effects on attainment rates and levels of proficiency;
how a second language can be communicated.
