Synopsis

Pre-service education students will be asked to examine their own
attitudes, beliefs and appreciations of mathematics, as reflected by
the way they present mathematical ideas, the language they use, and so
on. Theories relating to the development of attitudes towards
mathematics teaching and learning will be discussed, and approaches to
changing negative attitudes will be considered.

Students will be challenged to examine how the attitudes and beliefs
of learners of mathematics strongly influence not only the ways they
go about learning mathematics, but also the type of links they
establish between their own personal worlds and formal mathematics.
The nature of links between cognition and affect will be explored.
