Principal Accountabilities: Top of Page
1. Provide specialised skills and knowledge in a wide range of manufacturing techniques and materials applications to meet the requirements of staff and students across all disciplines within the faculty and from other areas in the university.
2.
Provide specialised advice
and design consultation in regard to project proposals and research projects.
3.
Provide time and materials cost estimates as required
for project proposals to faculty management for funding considerations.
4.
Provide instruction and training to staff and students
in the safe use of mechanical workshop equipment.
5. Ensure that staff and students using workshop equipment are supervised.
6. Manage the workshop during short absences of Workshop Manager.
Duties: Top of Page
1. Supervise all workshop activities by:
i.
Providing first point of contact for
workshop requests.
ii.
Providing prototype & concept designs to general
specifications, materials advice for students and staff at all levels.
2. Manufacture components and equipment for approved staff, undergraduate and postgraduate projects.
3. Project and time management from
concept to finished product by:
i.
Advising on consumable acquisition through faculty
purchasing;
ii.
Costing of projects as required; and
iii. Relevant record keeping maintaining accurate records. Eg; Work Permits, Job Times, Stock Control and Ordering.
4. Appraise
competency of prospective users of workshop equipment to operate the equipment
and issue a work permit if competency level is deemed as adequate by providing
instruction and training to staff and students to improve competency level to
meet work permit criteria.
5. Conduct Risk Assessments with Faculty Safety Officer and prepare Safe Work Practice documentation for new and existing equipment to meet statutory safety requirements.
6. Advise
and direct other staff and students in the safe operation of mechanical
workshop equipment and methods of manufacture.
7. Advise on design methods, function, safety and suitability of project requests and practical apparatus for faculty academic, research and student use.
8. Assist in the maintenance of a safe working environment for staff and students.
9. Maintain
accurate records of training activities to ensure safe work practices are
adhered to in the mechanical workshop.
10. Participate
in Emergency Squad Training activities as required by the Operations Manager.
11. Repair and maintain workshop machinery and
equipment.
12. Manage the Workshop
during short absences of the Workshop Manager.
