Spraying the Bitumen for a Sprayed Surfacing

Left: A bitumen sprayer making a
spray run.

The hot bitumen is sprayed as a thin film
over the pavement surface

Right: Close up of spray nozzles.

The spray bar is fitted with a series of
slotted jets which direct a fan of hot
bitumen onto the pavement. The slots are
angled so that there is overlap between
adjacent fans.

Left: Starting a spray run.

The sprayer truck starts well before the
planned starting point of spraying, so
that it is moving at constant speed by the
time spraying is due to commence. The
operator at the rear of the unit starts the
spray operation at the planned point.

Right: Spraying over obstacles.

Frequently manholes, hydrants and pits
(shown) are located in the pavement.
These can be covered with strong
paper or other covering, which is
removed after the spraying operation
(along with the attached surfacing).
