Spreading the Aggregate for a Sprayed Surfacing

Left: Spreading aggregate from a
truck mounted spreader.

The spreader box is fitted to the tray of a
tip truck. Aggregate is spread through the
box as the truck reverses over the newly
sprayed bitumen. Spreading must occur
before the hot bitumen cools.

Right: Close up of aggregate
spreading.

The aggregate is dropped from a
minimum height so as to minimise the
bounce of the particles.

Left: Adjustment of width of
spreading.

The operator on the rear of the truck
controls the flow of aggregate through
the spreader box, and can also adjust
the width of spreading to suit the width
of bitumen.

Right: Rolling the aggregate.

The aggregate particles must be firmly
embedded in the bitumen and this is
achieved by rolling the aggregate. This
picture shows the use of a steel wheeled
roller for this purpose.

Left: Rolling the aggregate.

Use of a rubber tyred roller is often
preferred for aggregate rolling, as there
is less chance of crushing the aggregate
particles.
