The Development of Transport

Left: A team of oxen pulling a cart.

Animal power has been used as a means
of transport since early times.

Right: Rickshaw.

The rickshaw is an example of the use of
human power as a means of transport.
The use of human power was the first
means of transport.

Left: A steam powered bus.

The industrial revolution brought about
the harnessing of steam power. Steam
proved successful for rail locomotion,
but its use in road vehicles was limited as
the internal combustion engine proved to
be better suited for such vehicles.

Right: Use of petroleum powered
vehicles.

The development of petrol and diesel
powered engines led to their use in road
vehicles, as the power source was small
and lightweight compared to those
required for steam or electric
propulsion.
