Port Facilities

Left: Port of Adelaide.

This picture shows the extensive land
infrastructure (storage sheds, silos, roads,
etc.) needed for a marine port.

Right: Port of Melbourne.

A view from the water of storage sheds
at the Port of Melbourne.

Left: Wharves and Fenders, Portland
Harbour.

The interface between ships and land
based facilities occurs at wharves and
docks. Substantial fenders are needed to
absorb the large loadings imparted by
ships as they impact wharf structures.

Right: Fisherman Islands Port,
Brisbane.

The Fisherman Islands port at the mouth
of the Brisbane River is a fairly new port.
This picture shows the large land area
required to support the shipping activities,
and the links to land based transport.
