Warning Signs

Left: Floodway Sign.

The normal form of Warning Sign is a
square sign with the diagonal vertical,
and black lettering or symbol on a
yellow background. The warning sign
advises of a possible hazard which the
driver may encounter. The driver does
not have to heed the sign, but ignores it
at their own peril.

Right: + Sign.

This warning sign indicates the existance
of a road junction. The sign uses a
symbol rather than words and the
majority of road users would interpret
the sign this way, and not as a plus
sign. However the driver must be able to
relate the sign to road features and would
expect to encounter the road junction
soon after seeing the sign.
action.

Left: Left Lane Ends / Merge Right
Sign.

The first sign (the upper one) indicates
the hazard being approached.
The second sign follows this up with a
message about the consequential
action that will be required from the
motorist, thus giving the driver more
information than would be conveyed with
a single sign. Care must be taken to
ensure that excessive information is
not given to the motorist, as this may
cause panic or confusion (due to lack of
time to absorb all the information).

Right: Curve Sign plus Advisory
Speed Plate.

As in the example above, this sign is
conveying a two-part message. The first
is that a series of curves is coming up
(with the first one a curve to the left), and
that the recommended speed for this
curve series is 60 km/h.

Note that in this case the signs have been
overlapped and the top sign loses its
full impact.

Left: Advance Warning of Pedestrian
crossing.

This warning sign warns of another
warning sign and crossing that will soon
be encountered. The pedestrian crossing
sign is circular and is the only warning
sign of this shape, but still retains the
black on yellow colouring of other
warning signs.
