Greg Coombes, Senior Graphic Designer, Interactive Learning Services, Distance Education Centre, was the winner of the 1999 General Staff Award for Excellence - Outstanding Service.

Greg is a long-servicing employee of USQ, having taken up a position as graphic designer some 21 years ago. During his years of service, Greg has worked to promote the University to the local, national and international communities through his print and web designs. Greg was nominated for the award by his supervisor who stated that Greg's creative ideas and attention to detail have complimented the growth of USQ from a regional university to a leader in international and distance education.

Greg says he is proud to have been part of the development of the University's corporate image. In particular, Greg has developed the University's crest (as seen on all corporate publications) and designed thousands of publications including University Handbooks and Annual Reports. More recently, Greg has been extensively involved with USQOnline, providing design input from the conception stage to the completed site which was launched by the Queensland Premier in 1999. Greg says that he hopes to be involved in future online initiatives which will enable him to help shape the university's corporate image in the new millennium.

Graphic design has changed significantly over the period of Greg's career. In his earliest days with the University, all design was done manually using 'cut and paste' techniques. Now all Greg's work is done using the latest in computerised technology. In order to remain up-to-date with the latest techniques in design, Greg has undertaken various professional development activities including upgrading his diploma qualification to a Bachelor of Arts (Graphic Design), and undertaking international development activities at the University of South Pacific and Georgia Southern University.

According to Greg, the increasing focus of the University on flexible delivery and technology-enhanced education has made his job continually challenging and stimulating. Greg particularly enjoys the collegiality of working in teams to complete large projects, and acknowledges the professionalism of other DEC staff, including Professor Jim Taylor (DVC), Manuela Schmid, Julie Meinke, Lynn Zeckomske and Professor David Ross (INDELTA), in assisting him to receive this accolade. Greg says he intends to use his prize money to travel to the United Kingdom or Europe on exchange or enrol in a Master of Design at Griffith University.
