ENG8207 Technological Innovation and Development
Teaching Profile
My teaching duties are in the areas of management, design and projects. Courses MEC2902, MEC3303 and ENG3003 are at the second, third and fourth levels of the Bachelor of Engineering program while ENG8101 and ENG8207 are in the Master of Technology Management postgraduate program.
I have also taught in the areas of fluid mechanics and statics / dynamics especially in the early years of my teaching duties. Thus I have covered the basic breadth of the Mechanical teaching curriculum.
Student Evaluation and Achievement
In most instances I am rated at or above the Faculty average especially with respect to my competency, diligency and helpfulness. During my time as HOD several of my students have achieved outstanding academic success such as Shane Clark - University Medal 1989; Robyn Araujo - University Medal 1997, Rick Coker, Heath Sharp, Bruce Northway, Gordon Gore and Scott Patrick, Faculty Prize winners.
Production Of Study Materials
In 1992 unit 70710 Engineering Management and Practice was developed into a full external package for final year students in the Bachelor Engineering and Bachelor of Technology courses. I specifically, was responsible for developing Study Book 2 which deals with management principals and economics. The module on economics was dictated by the late Mr Vern White and transformed, through editing and some revision, to the current written form by myself. Certainly my MBA economics studies assisted greatly in this. I hope this scholarship is a tribute to Vern as I enjoyed working with him greatly and did my best to ensure he would be remember by it. In 1997 I lead the conversion of this package into the new units of ENG3003 Engineering Management and ENG4004 Engineering Management Science.
An external package was developed (1999) in conjunction with Mr Chris Snook for MEC3303 System Design. This package uses team project work as well as the traditional educational material for student learning. Furthermore I am team teaching MEC2902 Mechanical Practice 2 with Chris based on the Warman's Design and Construct competition.
I have also produced an external package for 70845 Production Engineering. I was the team leader responsible for this and developed a study book on work study and operations and production management as well as coordinating sections on computer numerical controlled machining and metrology.
Recently I have created study materials for ENG8101 Technological Impact and It's Management (2004) and ENG8207 Technological Innovation and Development (2005) for the Master of Technology Management postgraduate program.
Peer Review
Mr Peter Pemberton, Principal Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering, reviews my teaching as follows:-
"The first point to emphasize is the breadth of Mr Fulcher's teaching experience. Although his focus lies in industrial / production engineering, he has taught in the thermofluids and statics / dynamics areas. He has taught at Associate Diploma, Bachelor of Technology and Bachelor of Engineering levels both on campus and externally. He has prepared external study materials. In short he has the breadth of teaching experience I would consider necessary to head Mechanical Engineering. In my opinion Mr Fulcher's performance as a teacher is above average and it would be unrealistic to expect a higher grading given his other duties."
