- Biography (CV -- formal stuff)
General Information
My major professional interest is in measurement and instrumentation;
and in Australia this interest been mainly applied to instrumentation for
agriculture and (in recent years) food industries.
I emigrated to Australia in 1981 with an industrial background in electronics
(avionics) and an academic background in physics (BSc degree) and
micrometeorology and environmental physics (research work and
PhD).
Since then I have taught a range of subjects at USQ and initiated, participated
in or supervised student contributions to research projects spanning:
• agricultural machinery performance
-- in the broadacre, sugar cane and horticultural industries;
• erosion control (strip-cropping);
• evaporation estimation and soil moisture assessment; and
• animal industries
-- feedlot and piggery odour assessment; abattoir automation; dairy
process instrumentation.
I undertake reviewing for the journals Computers and Electronics in Agriculture
(for which I am Australian Editorial Board member) and IEEE Transactions
on Instrumentation and Measurement, and currently I am involved as co-Editor-in-Chief
and Editor of Vol.1 Fundamentals of the encyclopedia set Comprehensive
Sensor Technology to be published by Elsevier.
I also have professional involvement with the Engineers, Australia in the promotion
of instrumentation and control (via the National Committee
on Automation, Control and Instrumentation NCACI).
My occasional recreational activities include completion/restoration of
the residence and the junk therein; recreational concreting; framing of artwork
(created by my spouse); an interest
in food and wine; and sitting on the verandah contemplating the horizon (and
the completion/restoration of . . . ).
Current Research Activity
(with apologies for the lack of detail at this time):
- Acidity measurement in dairy processes
- Micrometeorology of cattle feedlots
- Evaporation from dams and storages
- Micromet. measurements via eddy correlation
Teaching Involvement (present and recent past)
- Courses ENG4111/4112 Research Project
- This course pair is undertaken by all final-level BEng, BSurv and BTech(GIS)
students and runs all year (S1+S2).
- I am currently examiner in this course pair and this is largely a
organisational role -- see the Research Project home
page -- but during S1 2005 I will hand over to
A/Prof Frank Young. I
will then become Moderator, which is an overview and quality control role.
- Non-USQ visitors are encouraged to view the project
topics undertaken by students, both currently and in recent years.
- Course ELE4109 Measurement Science and Instrument
Engineering
- This is a core study in the BEng Instrumentation and Control major
and an option study in other majors.
- I am the originator and examiner in this course -- see the current
course specification
for a synopsis and other details.
- The MS&IE home page
contains update information.
- Dave Parsons is currently
the unit moderator.
The history:
- Course ENV4106 Irrigation Science
- I contribute three modules on EVAPORATION -- theory, measurement
and estimation, which form part of this unit.
- From 2005 Dr Ian Craig has
taken over this teaching and Prof Rod
Smith is the course examiner.
- Course ENV3105 Hydrology
- I used to contribute a short course within this course on basic
meteorology and hydrometeorology, including basic meteorological physics,
rainfall generation and climatology.
- From 2005 Dr Ian Craig has taken
over this teaching and Assoc.Prof Mark
Porter is the course examiner.
- Course ELE4605 Fields and Waves
- After a long involvement with electromagnetics and microwaves,
I am not currently teaching in this course.
- Assoc Prof Jim Ball is currently
the unit examiner.
- Course ELE3507 Electronic
Measurement
- I am the originator of this course in (something like) its current
form, and co-author of the study materials. I am not currently teaching in
this unit, although I remain the course Moderator.
- Dave Parsons is currently
the unit examiner.
Professional Involvement
- (still to be written up!)
