General Information

My major professional interest is in measurement and instrumentation; and in Australia this interest been mainly applied to instrumentation for agriculture and (in recent years) food industries.

I emigrated to Australia in 1981 with an industrial background in electronics (avionics) and an academic background in physics (BSc degree) and micrometeorology and environmental physics (research work and PhD).

Since then I have taught a range of subjects at USQ and initiated, participated in or supervised student contributions to research projects spanning:

•  agricultural machinery performance
 -- in the broadacre, sugar cane and horticultural industries;

• erosion control (strip-cropping);

• evaporation estimation and soil moisture assessment;  and

• animal industries
 -- feedlot and piggery odour assessment; abattoir automation; dairy process instrumentation.

I undertake reviewing for the journals Computers and Electronics in Agriculture (for which I am Australian Editorial Board member) and IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement, and currently I am involved as co-Editor-in-Chief and Editor of Vol.1 Fundamentals of the encyclopedia set Comprehensive Sensor Technology to be published by Elsevier.

I also have professional involvement with the Engineers, Australia in the promotion of instrumentation and control (via the National Committee on Automation, Control and Instrumentation NCACI).

My occasional recreational activities include completion/restoration of the residence and the junk therein; recreational concreting; framing of artwork (created by my spouse); an interest in food and wine; and sitting on the verandah contemplating the horizon (and the completion/restoration of . . . ).
