The primary purpose of the Department of Nursing at USQ is to prepare graduates in nursing to assume responsible roles as health care providers and as community members. The Department values and seeks to develop student integrity, breadth of perspective, compassion, knowledge and skill by providing an educational environment and professional freedom which is conducive to intellectual, social and cultural development, whilst endorsing the crucial links between research and practice.

The Department was established in 1989 and, since its inception , has developed courses for pre-registration, post-registration and postgraduate students. The Department has won wide-spread acclaim for its excellence in clinical teaching in the pre-registration programme. The post-registration programme continues to attract large numbers of students who choose the freedom of external study with no compulsory residential school requirements. In 1992 USQ won a major grant to develop a Graduate Diploma and Masters course in Rural and Remote Health, and this was offered for the first time in 1995. The Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) commenced in 1995.

Future plans include a Graduate Diploma in Mental Health Nursing, a Graduate Diploma in Midwifery and Graduate Diploma and Masters courses in Nursing.
