Module 1 Exercise 1
Using the search tools
Aim: This exercise aims to give you experience in searching a major online database in the USQ library: AUSTROM.
1. Access AUSTROM from the library Home Page: http://www.usq.edu.au/library/eservices/bl-spirs.htm, then click on "Access WebSpirs 4.3", and then tick the box next to AUSTROM:APAIS (Public Affairs).
2. Click on "Open Selected Databases". (Any database you have selected will now be available to your search.)
3. Click on "WebSpirs Tutorial" and follow the instructions.
4. After completing the tutorial, enter one or more key words for your dissertation topic. Try several different methods of searching for these words or phrases.
5. Note down the combination of words that obtained for you the greatest number of relevant articles.
6. Email to yourself any articles you would like to keep.
7. Compile a reference list of all relevant articles.
8. Email the results of 5 and 7 to your supervisor, together with any comments or problems you may have experienced, and your suggestions for addressing any similar problems in future searches.
