All of these are potential hazards of publication. You cannot avoid all
possible hazards, but by considering as many outcomes as possible, you can
at least take steps to avoid the most important ones. You can avoid the
problems of insufficient anonymity by being creative in your use of
pseudonyms - for example, you may have to delete reference to someone's
occupation if there is only one person in this occupation in a particular
community or organization, or you may have to make an occupation more
generic to avoid identifying individuals inadvertently. You can avoid
misrepresenting the views of participants by checking with them prior to
publication that this is what they intended to say. You can avoid talking
to the press, but this is more difficult, especially if the topic is
`newsworthy'. |
