Owners of copyright in computer programs have the exclusive right to:
- reproduce the program in a material form (including copying the program to
the hard disk of a computer, and writing or typing the source code of the
program);
- publish the program;
- make an “adaptation” of the program (i.e. make a version of the program in
either the same or a different programming language or code or notation: eg
converting a program in object code to its source code); and
- communicate the program to the public (eg by making it available online or
by electronically transmitting it).

As a result of the US Free Trade Agreement, from 1 January
2005 the duration of copyright will be extended to 70 years from the death of
the creator.
