Interactive Multimedia (FET5622)
Folio by Mark Phythian
Activity 1.1 Introduction I am completing FET5622 as an elective in a Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching and Learning, but I have always had an interest in multimedia and the presentation of information using graphics. I am an Electrical Engineer lecturing at the University of Southern Queensland. My primary field is computer hardware and software design, mainly embedded controllers - the sort you might find in consumer goods, industrial equipment etc.
In my spare time I am very involved in our local Repertory Theatre Society, after recently completing a season on stage as Ambrose in 'Private Fears in Public Places', I am currently directing a comedy which opens in September.
Multimedia Experience I have authored a few web pages, but with minimal use of multimedia. I have hyperlinked to images, audio recordings and the odd animation, but have done no interactivity other than standard navigation. Examples of Multimedia NASA Kids Club - This interactive website (attached to the primary NASA website) is a relatively simple but effective means for children to browse a some of the vast inventory of NASA material, play some simple games and in the process learn some facts and history about NASA and space exploration.
The site uses roll over triggering with sound effects to grab attention and simple but effective animations that load quickly, a must for younger visitors.

This fairly comprehensive set of interactive graphical representations clearly demonstrate many physical phenomenon and principles.
While the experiments involving sound include some audio, I think this site is significantly lacking without sound effects or some audio in most of the simulations.

- appropriate use of media type to communicate information or function on website elements, for example -
- an animated graphic to draw attention to a button or navigation option
- an audio clip to give feedback commentary while a series of steps are followed
- suitably sized and delivered media elements to minimise effective waiting times by the viewer, for example -
- thumbnail images with links to full size images
- streamed video as opposed to fully downloaded video clips
