Origins   The Warman Student Design Competition was initated in 1988 by the Panel on Engineering Design as a national "design and build" competition open to students in mechanical engineering in their second year of study.

It is the outgrowth of a decade or more of such competitions at the University of New South Wales and elsewhere across Australia. The national competiton was championed by Alex Churches. Through the generous financial support of Dr Charles Warman and Warman International this competition has been run with increasing acceptance at univerities around Australia and since 1992, New Zealand.

Nature of
Competition
Students are provided with a simple design brief set within an appropriate scenario. Working in small groups the students design and build a devices to meet the brief and then compete on each campus select the device that performs best. These local winners are flown to a national final held in conjunction with an appropriate Institution Conference usually in September.

At each university the students undertake the competiton as part of a scheduled subject within their course normally during the first semester, although it is possible to attempt it in the early part of the second. The Warman Competition is typically worth 5-10% of the credit value of the subject.

National Organiser   The current national organiser for the Warman Student Design Competition is Chris Snook. The 2001 National Final was held on the 29th of September at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney. The 2002 National Final is planned to be held in Sydney in late September.
