Role

Professor Mark Harvey, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) leads the Research and Innovation Division at the University of Southern Queensland.

Professor Harvey works to enhance the University’s research profile, its research performance and its culture of research excellence and quality training. He oversees a coordinated focus on fostering collaborations and partnerships with government, industry and the research community, within Australia and around the world to deliver applied research outcomes that have global impact.

His key responsibilities include the implementation of the USQ Research Plan, managing its research programs, partnerships and investments, driving research performance and supporting research staff and students to achieve excellence.

The Division comprises the Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor, and the Offices of Research, Research Graduate Studies, and Research Development. It is responsible for the University’s research activities within USQ faculties, its three research institutes and seven research centres.

Prior to joining USQ, Mark spent seven years in the venture capital (VC) industry. Most recently he was a Partner with CM Capital Investments, one of Australia’s leading venture capital companies with over $250 million under management, and prior to this as the CEO of an early stage investment and development company.

In these positions, Mark played a significant role in the management of investee company’s research programs, finances, fund raising, intellectual property, physical assets and executive team recruitment.

He has been on the Board of Directors of ASX and NASDAQ listed public companies, a member of the Investment Committee of two university seed funds, a member of numerous granting panels including Queensland Government Smart State investment programs and a member on the board of directors of AusBiotech Ltd, the industry body for the Australian Life Sciences sector.

Prior to his VC experience, Mark worked with UniQuest, the commercialization company of the University of Queensland. During these five years, Mark played a major role in establishing and securing funding for ten start-up companies, and in negotiating licensing agreements with global life sciences organisations.

Prior to joining UniQuest, Mark was a Senior Lecturer at Queensland University of Technology where he obtained NH&MRC and Queensland Cancer Fund grants to conduct research programs in cancer and developmental biology. Mark has a PhD in Physiology and a MBA from the University of Queensland.

Memberships and affiliations

Mark is currently a member of the Queensland Government’s Science and Innovation Advisory Council and a board member of Toowoomba & Surat Basin Enterprise (TSBE) and the Queensland Cyber Infrastructure Foundation (QCIF).
