Pre-requisite: Students in all BEDU specialisations will have completed all prior Professional Experience courses in their recommended enrolment pattern. Students must have successfully completed the entire previous year's professional experience courses in order to enrol in this course. Students must be available for a prescribed period of time to undertake a placement in a school or other approved site as required in this course.

In the 21st century, information and communication technologies (ICT) are critically important to every facet of daily life at school, work and in leisure pursuits. Learning and teaching in the 21st Century requires educators to be proficient in situating ICT as integral to the curriculum, teaching and and to the learning experiences of students. For educators to be able to use ICT to make informed pedagogical decisions with respect to the use of ICT for teaching and learning and thus achieve curriculum goals, they must understand how students learn with ICT and the learning affordances provided by ICT.


Students will engage with the design and delivery of learning experiences for individuals and groups employing a range of developmentally appropriate and flexible teaching, learning and assessment strategies and resources in ICT enriched environments. The course includes a 15 day, school based practicum which provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding related to ICT and pedagogy and their ability to integrate ICT into the curriculum. This Professional Experience component will provide specific opportunities for students to plan, implement and reflect upon their developing ICT pedagogy. Resources developed throughout the course may be selected by students for inclusion in their digital portfolios, which they will create throughout the program as evidence of their learning. Note: Minimum enrolment numbers applying to this offering. Should enrolments not reach the minimum number required for on-campus study, students may be transferred to the ONLINE offering and advised of this change before semester commences.


The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course. The assessment item(s) that may be used to assess student achievement of an objective are shown in parenthesis. On completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. outline the influence on curriculum and pedagogy of historical and current international and national policies and initiatives relevant to the use of ICT in diverse learning and teaching contexts [Assignment 1, Assignment 2]
  2. describe, discuss and apply teaching and learning theories and frameworks that inform ICT pedagogies [All assignments]
  3. examine, discuss and reflect on core ideas about the knowledge generation and knowledge economy and the implications of these for curriculum and pedagogy [Assignment 1, Assignment 2]
  4. discuss and reflect upon the role of ICT in the curriculum, learning and teaching [All assignments]
  5. examine and critique personal beliefs and practices that impact on their use of ICT for learning and teaching [All assignments]
  6. design and implement worthwhile student learning experiences in which ICT are integral to the curriculum and where learners are encouraged to use ICT to locate, organize, research, (interpret, analyse), communicate, represent and (create knowledge) appropriate to particular contexts [Assignment 2, Assignment 3]
  7. develop strategic pathways to continue their learning journey and professional recognition in relation to ICT and pedagogy [All assignments].
  8. demonstrate competence in and appropriate use of language and literacy, including spelling, grammar, punctuation and bibliographic referencing. (All assignments)

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To satisfactorily complete an individual assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks.

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    If students submit assignments after the due date without (prior) approval of the examiner then a penalty of 5% of the total marks gained by the student for the assignment may apply for each working day late up to ten working days at which time a mark of zero may be recorded. No assignments will be accepted after model answers have been posted.

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course and must satisfactorily complete the sector-based professional experience.

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.

  6. Examination information:

  7. Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
    As there are no examinations in this course, there will be no deferred or supplementary examinations.
