Students are required to undertake a supervised 25 hour VET teaching/training placement in an approved Vocational Education and Training setting. Students will also need to have acquired or be working towards the attainment of appropriate levels of vocational competence and qualifications in the occupational field and subject area in which they will be teaching/training.

State law in Queensland (Australia) requires that all adults working/undertaking professional experience/researching with children under the age of 18, in the state of Queensland are required to possess a current suitability card (Blue Card). Competency-based education, training and assessment underpins Australia's national system of vocational education and training. Therefore, students wishing to deliver education and training leading to nationally recognised vocational qualifications must have knowledge and understanding, as well as demonstrated competence, in the application of competency-based training and assessment methodologies as well as the ability to design training programs based on National Training Packages to meet the particular needs of a variety of learners, clients and other stakeholders in school, industry and community education and training settings.


This course aims to enable teachers and trainers in post-compulsory education programs (schools, TAFE private and community providers) and in industry workplace training, to develop knowledge, understanding and skills in the design, development, implementation and assessment of competency-based programs that lead to nationally recognised vocational qualifications. As such, the course is designed to meet the requirements for students to demonstrate competence equivalent to completion of a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment regarded as the minimum industry standard for delivery and assessment of nationally recognised vocational training. Successful completion of this course requires learners to demonstrate competence 'on the job' and therefore has a mandatory 25 hour practical VET teaching/training placement. Students who successfully complete this course may choose to apply for recognition against the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, which will incur a nominal administration fee payable by the student. The Professional Experience component must be completed in an Australian training & assessment context


The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course. The assessment item(s) that may be used to assess student achievement of an objective are shown in parenthesis. On completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a sound understanding of competency-based approaches to the design, delivery and assessment of vocational education and training programs (All Assignments )
  2. Demonstrate a sound understanding of the national context of vocational education and training including legislative, regulatory, policy and quality frameworks (Assignment 1)
  3. Demonstrate competency in the design of competency-based programs to meet identified training/learning needs (Assignments 2 & 3)
  4. Demonstrate competency in the establishment and maintenance of safe and positive adult learning environments that meet the needs of diverse learners in a range of settings (Assignment 4)
  5. Demonstrate competency in the delivery of relevant, responsive, flexible and learner-centred training that supports learners to meet their learning objectives and meets industry standards (Assignment 4)
  6. Demonstrate knowledge, understanding and skills in the implementation of competency-based assessment principles and practices including recognition of prior learning/current competence and validation processes (All assignments)
  7. Demonstrate the capacity for effective communication and collaboration and ongoing professional development. (Assignments 1 and 4)
  8. Demonstrate knowledge, understanding and application of appropriate personal, professional, vocational and academic literacies (All Assignments)
  9. Demonstrate knowledge, understanding and application of appropriate ICT uses in education and training. (All Assignments)

  1. A mark of one (1) indicates you have passed the VET Practical Teaching Placement and/or Evidence Portfolio component. A mark of zero (0) indicates you have not passed the VET Practical Teaching Placement and/or Evidence Portfolio component. Practical VET Teaching Placement should be conducted as per the Professional Experience Calendar unless approval has been granted by the Course Examiner.

Important assessment information

  1. Attendance requirements:
    ONLINE MODE: There are no attendance requirements for this course. However, it is the students' responsibility to study all material provided to them including discussion fora scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To satisfactorily complete an individual assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks, or in the case of assignment 4, complete all assessment requirements to a satisfactory standard.

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    If students submit assignments after the due date without (prior) approval of the examiner then a penalty of 5% of the total marks gained by the student for the assignment may apply for each working day late up to ten working days at which time a mark of zero may be recorded. No assignments will be accepted after model answers have been posted.

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course and must satisfactorily complete the sector-based professional experience including the Evidence Portfolio for Assignment 4.

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.

  6. Examination information:
    There is no examination in this course.

  7. Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
    As there are no examinations in this course, there will be no deferred or supplementary examinations.

Many education courses include a practical component (professional experience, project work, research, assessment etc.) that may require engagement with children under the age of 18. It is your responsibility to ensure that you possess a current suitability card (Blue Card) before commencing any practical components of this course.
