Rationale

Nursing is a diverse practice profession and the inclusion of a sequence of professional experience courses is fundamental to ensure that the graduand is a safe beginning practitioner. Clinical roles and responsibilities for Registered Nurses focus on the concepts of caring, holistic care, best clinical practice, oral and written professional communication and professional values including integrity, ethical decision-making, critical thinking and reflection on practice. It is therefore essential that students have a sound grounding in the application of theoretical principles of nursing practice and an understanding of professionalism required by the Registered Nurse for quality patient care.

Synopsis

This course will provide students with opportunities to demonstrate the performance and responsibilities required for safe practice. NUR2499 allows the student to develop their professional interactions, therapeutic relationships and nursing care practices associated with caring for individuals, families and significant others. Students develop critical thinking and clinical decision making within a medical or surgical clinical setting (NUR2100 is a pre-requisite). The aim is to develop skills introduced in prior lab and clinical courses (NUR2800 and NUR2199) and to apply knowledge learnt from past or concurrent theoretical courses. Students will be required to be reflective about their clinical practice experiences for both their professional development and lifelong learning journey. Students will participate in a 160 hour clinical placement which includes 120 hours off campus in clinical settings and 40 hours in campus-based activities of professional development and simulation. Students will be assessed at the interim and end stages of the off campus practicum using an assessment tool consistent with the National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse. They will be assessed in their campus-based week with an assessment tool representative of the activities including a simulation-based assessment in the clinical laboratory.

Objectives

On completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. Conduct clinical practice which can be ethically justified and in accordance with legislation and common law (National Competency Standards 1.2. (U1. Ethical research and enquiry skills)
  2. Integrate and apply knowledge of the independent and collaborative role of nursing to simulated laboratory scenarios and nursing practice situations (National Competency Standards 3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10)
  3. Demonstrate professional written and oral communication skills in practice and in simulation. (National Competency Standards 2) (U4 Written and oral communication skills, U5 Interpersonal skills, U6 Teamwork).
  4. Demonstrate awareness of an individual's unique values, beliefs, customs and culture which provide the framework for that individual?s experience of health, illness, or death. (National Competency Standards 2, 9, 10) (U7 Cultural literacy skills, U8 Management, planning & organisation skills)
  5. Demonstrate the ability to utilise systematic data collection, effective clinical reasoning strategies and evidence-based practice to critically analyse events and intervene appropriately to plan, implement and evaluate safe and appropriate nursing care for potential clients in simulated situations and for clients experiencing compromised health in clinical settings.   6. Perform clinical procedures under appropriate Registered Nurse supervision, that have been introduced in the pre-requisite course NUR2800: Situated Practice and the co-requisite (or prior ) course NUR3200: Managing Complex Care. (National Competency Standard 9)
  7. Demonstrate an understanding of the professionalism required of the Registered Nurse by successfully completing the attendance and activities provided in a campus based professional development week. (National Competency Standards 1-10)

Important assessment information

  1. Attendance requirements:
    It is the student's responsibility to: (a) attend 100% of the clinical placement period (120 hours) within the assigned weeks which have been allocated through the SONIA clinical placement allocation system. (b) attend all shifts as allocated at the beginning of the clinical placement by the preceptor or mentor (these may involve day shifts, evening shifts, night shifts, weekend shifts and public holidays). Changes to rostered shift will only be considered for extremely extenuating circumstances and require the written permission of the examiner of the course in collaboration with the health care facility; (c) attend and participate appropriately in all activities scheduled for item a, as part of this practicum either on campus or at the clinical venue including orientation, briefing sessions, debriefing sessions, tutorials or in-service. (d) Attend 100% of the professional development week/clinical simulation which is offered once each semester. There are no provisions for make-up for this week. (d) be informed about course-related activities and administration (e) access and obtain all material provided to complete course objectives and activities.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To complete each assessment item, students must obtain 100% (a mark of 1) for the following assessments: Interim Clinical Report, Clinical Timesheet, Final Clinical Evaluation, Professional Development Portfolio and Lab Attendance. The remaining assessment, Laboratory Assessment requires 50% to pass: To complete the Final Clinical Evaluation satisfactorily, Students must achieve each of the competencies to the minimum standard identified in the course Clinical Guide.
    To complete the Interim Clinical Report satisfactorily, students must obtain the signature of the preceptor/mentor on the clinical Interim Evaluation after 10 shifts.
    To complete the Clinical Timesheet satisfactorily, students must complete attendance of 120 hours of placement in the allocated time and submit a completed timesheet.
    To complete the Laboratory attendance students must attend and be marked as present for 100% of the sessions provided.
    To complete the Professional Portfolio students must supply a completed portfolio including all components outlined in the portfolio and on study desk.
    To complete the Laboratory assessment students must achieve 50% of the available marks

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of a pass in this course, students are required to submit all assessment items and achieve the mark of 1 for Interim Clinical Report, Clinical Timesheet, Final Clinical Report, Professional Development Portfolio and Lab Attendance. Students also must submit and receive 50% of the available marks for the Laboratory Assessment.
    As P is the only passing grade available for this course, all students who are qualified for a passing grade will be given a grade of P. Other students will be given either a Failing grade or an Incomplete grade.
    There is no supplementary clinical time or supplementary time for the Professional Development week. The objectives for clinical practice must be satisfactorily completed within the allocated time or a failed grade will result.
    Note that a conceded pass is not available in this course due to accreditation requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    As P is the only passing grade available for this course, all students who are qualified for a passing grade will be given a grade of P. Other students will be given either a Failing grade or an Incomplete grade.

  6. Examination information:
    There is no examination in this course.

  7. Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
    As there are no examinations in this course, there will be no deferred or supplementary examinations.

Assessment notes

  1. Students must retain a copy of each item submitted for Assessment. If requested, students will be required to provide a copy of assignments submitted for assessment purposes. Such copies should be despatched to the USQ within 24 hours of receipt of a request being made.

  2. The due date for an assignment is the date by which a student must despatch the assignment to the USQ. The onus is on the student to provide proof of the despatch date, if requested by the Examiner.

  3. The Examiner may grant an extension of the due date of an assignment in extenuating circumstances. These extensions cannot be awarded if the assessment or model answers have been released to students.

  4. The Faculty will normally only accept assessments via EASE

  5. The Faculty will NOT accept submission of assignments by email to the examiner or by facsimile.

  6. APA is the referencing system required in this course. Students should use APA style in their assignments to format details of the information sources they have cited in their work. Other requirements

  1. Students need to be conversant with and will require access to e-mail and internet access to UConnect for this course.

  2. Students can expect that questions in assessment items in this course may draw upon knowledge and skills that they can reasonably be expected to have acquired before enrolling in the course. This includes knowledge contained in pre-requisite courses and appropriate communication, information literacy, analytical, critical thinking, problem solving or numeracy skills. Students who do not possess such knowledge and skills should not expect to achieve the same grades as those students who do possess them.

  3. Students of clinical courses must submit the following documents to the Faculty Office by the due date given for the current semester's SONIA allocations or a clinical placement will not be offered.

    These documents include: a) Current CPR Certification b) Completion of the Queensland Health Orientation Deed Polls, c) submission of the Hepatitis B titre declaration and titre results, d) signed and dated USQ declaration on Page 3 of the Clinical Placement Handbook; and e) Suitability for Working with Children Card (Blue Card) f) a current Police Certificate and g) Student placement checklist. Failure to adhere to submission of all required documentation by the due date will result in the student unable to attend a clinical placement and may result in a failed grade in the course

  4. Mandatory Reporting with AHPRA
    It is the student?s responsibility to notify the course examiner if they have a health impairment, which may result in conditions being placed upon their student registration with AHPRA. Education providers, such as USQ are required by law to report certain notifiable conduct (see http://www.ahpra.gov.au/Support/Glossary.aspx#N) and students must be aware of their responsibilities under this legislation. Administrative action may occur if a student fails to notify the course examiner of an APHRA notification made in relation to their practice.
