Organisations are an integral part of life. Understanding the behaviour of people, individually and collectively in organisations, is essential for the development and effective management of the human resources of industry. The primary aim is for the students to gain this understanding through the knowledge and methodology of the scientific study of behaviour.


This course concentrates on how psychological knowledge and methods can be applied in industrial and organisational settings. Particular topics concern such matters as job analysis and performance evaluation, assessment and selection, group behaviour, leadership, training and development, organisational change and development.


On completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. explain the competencies required to be an organisational psychologist;
  2. identify the issues involved in a job analyses and assessment;
  3. describe how to effectively appraise employee performance;
  4. identify tests that are both reliable and valid predictors of performance;
  5. explain the scientific approach to validating selection procedures;
  6. understand training and development;
  7. understand the principles behind motivation and job satisfaction;
  8. identify the issues involved in occupational stress;
  9. explain the range of leadership styles and how they differ across cultures and other contexts;
  10. explain strategies that improve team-work in the workplace and job redesign;
  11. explain the concept of organisational change and development.

Important assessment information

  1. Attendance requirements:
    It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities (such as lectures, tutorials, laboratories and practical work) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To complete the assignment satisfactorily, students must obtain at least 50% of the marks available for the assignment. To complete the examination satisfactorily, students must obtain at least 50% of the marks available for the examination. Students do not have to satisfactorily complete each assessment item to be awarded a passing grade in this course. Refer to Statement 4 below for the requirements to receive a passing grade in this course.

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4)

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the weighted aggregate of the marks (or grades) obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.

  6. Examination information:
    Candidates are allowed access only to specific materials during a Restricted Examination. The only materials that candidates may use in the restricted examination for this course are: writing materials and translation dictionary. Students whose first language is not English, may, take an appropriate unmarked non-electronic translation dictionary (but not technical dictionary) into the examination. Dictionaries with any handwritten notes will not be permitted. Translation dictionaries will be subject to perusal and may be removed from the candidate's possession until appropriate disciplinary action is completed if found to contain material that could give the candidate an unfair advantage.

  7. Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
    Any Deferred or Supplementary examinations for this course will be held during the next examination period.

Assessment notes

  1. The due date for an assignment is the date by which a student must despatch the assignment to the USQ. The onus is on the student to provide proof of the despatch date, if requested by the Examiner. There is no EASE submission for this course.

  2. Students must retain a copy of each item submitted for assessment. This must be produced within five days if required by the Examiner.

  3. Reliable access to the internet is a requirement of this course as the course contains electronic submission elements. In order to avoid internet issues, on-campus students should upload their assignments into EASE using the on-campus computer laboratories. External students who knowingly do not have reliable access to the internet should actively seek alternative internet access (e.g., Internet cafes, local libraries, or work places) for assessment submission. External students are able to use the on-campus student computer laboratories once access has been enabled. To be granted access, external students need to contact ICT and ask to have a student account enabled so that they can work on-campus. This needs to be requested at least one week before access is required.

  4. APA style is the referencing system required in this course. Students should use APA style in their assignments to format details of the information sources they have cited in their work. The APA style to be used is defined by the USQ Library's referencing guide. //
