A student must receive a passing grade in this course; it is not available for a conceded pass.

Students must be enrolled in their final or second final semester of study in the BNUR program.

Rationale

Transition to professional practice is best embraced as a challenging opportunity. This course is intended to assist the student to make a successful transition from student to registered nurse within ethico-legal parameters of the National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse. The course draws upon knowledge from both first and second year courses and introduces professional development concepts to develop student transition into the practice environment. Contemporary professional practice mandates that students comprehend their 'scope of practice' in order to practice within its parameters. The reflective skills extended in this course will enable students to critique and clarify professional knowledge and how such knowledge is situated in relation to clinical experience and the registered nurses scope of practice. Importantly the course will highlight the learning opportunities available in a constantly changing workplace, and model a process of lifelong learning for professional development.

Synopsis

This course will draw upon knowledge from both first and second year courses and introduce professional development concepts aimed at student transition into the practice environment. As such students are required to consider, value and interpret practice through exploration of how knowledge is used to inform professional practice issues, problems and incidents. Critical skills will be developed by students through the process of critical reflection. As such, concepts covered during the semester will be analysed through a critical reflective framework which will be applied to practice and professional development situations. The course content will expand the ethico-legal aspects of nursing practice introduced in previous courses. Concepts include ethical decision making, 'Code of Conduct' and the legal parameters for nurses in clinical practice. In addition, perspectives of transition to professional practice will be discussed and analysed. Concepts include, work expectations, critical review of the role of evidence for practice, Scope of Practice, role conflict, and role boundaries, reflection on practice, "caring for self", the role of the nurse in health care, developing a professional portfolio and strategies to support lifelong learning.

Objectives

On completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. engage in critical discussion which explores the relationship between work expectations, role conflict and role boundaries; (National Competency Standard 2.1; 2.5)
  2. critically analyse feedback from colleagues, evidenced based research and theoretical knowledge to support and advance professional development and personal accountability; (National Competency Standard 3.1; 3.3; 3.5)
  3. explore client issues and incidents that can pose as ethical and or legal dilemmas;(National Competency Standard 1.1; 2.1)
  4. critically apply relevant legal and ethical principles to future health care practice situations at the level of a beginning Registered Nurse; (National Competency Standard 1.1; 2.1)
  5. interpret, analyse and apply the nursing scope of practice to practice situations; (National Competency Standard 2.5)
  6. critically discuss strategies to facilitate the transition to professional practice for beginning Registered Nurses; (National Competency Standard 4.2)
  7. examine the elements, purpose and value of developing a professional profile
  8. construct a personal framework and plan for reflective practice and lifelong learning. (National Competency Standard 4.2)

  1. Attendance requirements:
    It is the students' responsibility to participate appropriately in all activities scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To satisfactorily complete an individual assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks. (Depending upon the requirements in Statement 4 below, students may not have to satisfactorily complete each assessment item to receive a passing grade in this course.)

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course. Note that a conceded pass is not available in this course due to accreditation requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the weighted aggregate of the marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.

  6. Examination information:
    There is no examination in this course.

  7. Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
    There will be no Deferred or Supplementary examinations in this course.

Assessment notes

  1. All of the assessments in this course are individual work only. Students need to understand USQ policy regarding plagiarism, collusion and cheating.

  2. In accordance with University Policy, the examiner may grant an extension of the due date of an assignment in extenuating circumstances.

  3. Students must retain a copy of each item submitted for assessment. If requested, students will be required to provide a copy of assignments submitted for assessment purposes. Such copies should be despatched to USQ within 24 hours of receipt of a request being made.

  4. All assessment items must be submitted by electronic submission. Refer to your Course Study Guide and course website on Study Desk for submission details. The Faculty will NOT accept submission of assignments by facsimile or email or hardcopy. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that their electronic submission is in the correct format and is the final version of the assignment. Resubmission due to error will not be accepted after the due date. Hardcopies or emailed versions will not be accepted. Times and dates refer to Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST).

  5. Where a student has failed to achieve a passing grade by 5% or less of the aggregated weighted marks or equivalent in the grading scale, the examiner in agreement with the moderator will consider recommending to the Board of Examiners the undertaking of supplementary assessment by the student, if the student has undertaken all of the required summative assessment for the course. A conceded pass is not available in this course.
