This course is designed to increase the student’s knowledge and understanding of the process of disease at the genetic, molecular, cellular and tissue level. This course precedes Pathology 2 which further explores systemic pathology and diseases of organ systems. Pathology 1 will enable the student to integrate the theory and practice of the various disciplines of pathology in their approach to the laboratory investigation, diagnosis and therapeutic options in individual patients and will enhance their capacity to make critical and informed judgments in a professional setting.


This course will consolidate the students' knowledge and understanding of the variuos disciplines of pathology in a study of the structural and functional changes in cells, tissues and organs associated with the human body's response to toxic stressors and injury. Pathology 1 and Pathology 2 will integrate the theory and associated laboratory practices presented in the Haematology, Clinical Biochemistry, Histopathology, Medical Microbiology and Immunology courses in the Bachelor of Health for the emerging Medical Laboratory Scientist.


On completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. explain the mechanisms involved in cellular and tissue repair and regeneration in the human body and their impact on interpretation of pathology results
  2. explain the processes involved in the human body’s adaptation to stress and disease and the associated clinical signs and symptoms and laboratory findings.
  3. interpret a comprehensive range of pathology results based on a solid understanding of the pathophysiological basis of human disease at the molecular, cellular and tissue level;
  4. employ a logical, systematic, collaborative and well informed problem solving approach to interpreting patient history, clinical signs and symptoms in the determination of appropriate laboratory investigation and diagnosis in individual patient cases;
  5. illustrate a high level of academic, scientific and professional literacy and effective digital and oral communication skills;
  6. employ safe work practices and illustrate a clear understanding of the ethical and professional responsibilities associated with working in a pathology laboratory.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To satisfactorily complete an individual assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks for that item.

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4).

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must obtain at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course (i.e. the Primary Hurdle), and have satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised), i.e. the end of semester examination by achieving at least 40% of the weighted marks available for that assessment item.

    Supplementary assessment may be offered where a student has undertaken all of the required summative assessment items and has passed the Primary Hurdle but failed to satisfy the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised), or has satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised) but failed to achieve a passing Final Grade by 5% or less of the total weighted Marks.

    To be awarded a passing grade for a supplementary assessment item (if applicable), a student must achieve at least 50% of the available marks for the supplementary assessment item as per the Assessment Procedure (point 4.4.2).

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.

  6. Examination information:
