Rationale

Integrated construction management represents the experience of working as part of a team of construction personnel responsible for the design and construction of a project. Students require experience in researching and working in teams for all stages of a construction project utilising computer software programs, to demonstrate integrated management processes and success in management of construction teams and projects.

Synopsis

The aim of this course is to provide an in-depth understanding of procedures and processes adopted to manage construction business operations including project and production management operations in an integrated manner to improve the planning and control, performance and predictability, productivity and buildability of construction to achieve project success, facilitated by the use of computer software and building information modelling. The importance of teamwork, meetings, communication, and collaborative work arrangements will also be explored for achieving project success including the use of advanced procurement techniques.

Objectives

The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course. On completion of this course, student should be able to:

  1. Evaluate how issues related to time, cost, quality etc. could be managed in an integrated format from concept to completion
  2. Appraise the types of risks and risk management strategies for a construction project
  3. Use computer software to plan, schedule, and control a construction project
  4. Apply building information modelling tools and techniques to a construction project
  5. Discuss the relevance of advanced procurement options for project success
  6. Formulate the various types of teams for construction project categorised by their nature, types of meetings and relevance and demonstrating the ability to successfully work in a team
  7. Analyse a given project and critically appraise how project performance could be improved
  8. Demonstrate appropriate written and communication skills
