The pre-requisite studies for EDR8802 in the Research Specialisation are completion of four (4) units taken from the recommended enrolment pattern of the selected specialisation.


The twin phenomena of increasing demands for educational accountability and the devolution of responsibility for decision making to the school and classroom level have resulted in the need for teachers and school administrators to be aware of and competent in the use of effective evaluation procedures and techniques. For teachers in influential positions within schools it is essential that the ability to plan and administer are complemented by the abilities to understand and conduct relevant evaluation projects relating to innovations with which they are associated.


This course introduces learners to the theory and practices of educational evaluation and evidence-based decision-making in education. They will compare the concept of educational evaluation with related concepts such as assessment and research; develop understanding of different approaches to, and models of, educational evaluation; consider responses to ethical issues in the processes of evaluation; explore the concepts of validity and reliability; select and justify appropriate data gathering devices and data analysis strategies for the conduct of evaluations; and understand the special case of evaluation of innovative educational programs.


On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. define and explain the concept of educational evaluation and distinguish it from related concepts such as assessment and research (Quiz 1 and Assignment)
  2. develop an appropriate approach and model for conducting educational evaluations, including the special case of evaluations adopting innovative approaches (Assignment)
  3. understand the concepts of validity, reliability and analogous qualitative criteria and apply them to the planning and conduct of an evaluation (Quiz 1 and 2 and Assignment)
  4. apply relevant principles to the construction and evaluation of instruments appropriate for collecting data necessary for an evaluation (Quiz 1 and 2 and Assignment)
  5. apply appropriate techniques to analyse and interpret data in the context of both qualitative and quantitative evaluations (Quiz 1 and 2 and Assignment)
  6. demonstrate competence in and appropriate use of language and literacy, including spelling, grammar, punctuation and bibliographic referencing (Assignment).

    To satisfactorily complete an individual assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks.

    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.

    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.
