Organisational transformation through learning is of fundamental importance to educational institutions in the 21st Century. Meeting the challenges posed by the expectation of continuous improvement in an increasingly complex environment and against a background of discontinuous change requires a reimaging of organisation and redefinition of the meaning of professionalism. It requires developing deeper understanding of organisational learning processes and kinds of leadership that may underpin sustainable change. Also crucial is an exploration of the concept of organisational capacity building and how it relates to the sustainability of change achieved through the learning within the organisation. This course outlines how organisational transformation may be achieved through learning and sustained through capacity building. Moving an educational organisation into the knowledge age, and beyond, requires a change of paradigm. While it is unlikely that such a paradigm could successfully be imposed, it can be achieved from within the organisation through learning.
This course consists of four modules. The first module is designed to set the context for the course, establishing the fundamental importance of educational transformation through learning to educational institutions in the 21st Century. The second and third modules set the scene from a theoretical perspective. Different approaches to organisational transformation are introduced and their underpinning concepts considered (including their implications for leadership practices). The concept of capacity building is given particular attention. The fourth module is more practical in its orientation and intent. Building on the first three modules, it explores transforming organisations through learning in relation to a particular school improvement process and capacity building model. This model allows exploration of how theory may translate into practice.
The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course. The assessment item(s) that may be used to assess student achievement of an objective are shown in parenthesis. On successful completion of this course students should be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of challenges currently confronting educational organisations and the importance of educators re-imaging their work (Assignment 1)
- demonstrate an understanding of different approaches to organisational transformation (Assignment 1, Assignment 2 (option 2))
- demonstrate knowledge of the basic concepts underpinning the different approaches to organisational transformation through learning and the implications of these for leadership (Assignment, 1, Assignment 2)
- apply key aspect of a school change process and organisational capacity building model to a specific workplace context (Assignment 2)
- contextualise and critically analyse issues relating to organisational transformation (Assignment 1, Assignment 2).

Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
To satisfactorily complete an individual assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks.

Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.
Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.
