Pre-requisite: 4 units of completed Postgraduate Study and minimum GPA 5, or approval of Examiner.


Masters students will apply their experiential knowledge to work with a supervisor in creating a significant practical project, dissertation or exegesis that will interrogate and explore the development of skills and knowledge specific to the students’ particular discipline.


Students will undertake a written research project (10,000 words) or a creative project (5,000 words or equivalent in creative work, plus a written exegesis of 5,000 words). This is an opportunity to work under the guidance of an academic supervisor, and to undertake structured research. The written work may be presented in the format of a research-based paper for publication in an approved academic or professional journal. For creative projects, the creative work can be in the form of short story, exhibition, performance, literary work, film script, film, or other approved format. The exegesis should describe the research process, explain the creative work and place the creative practice undertaken in context. Students should identify and contact a staff member in the appropriate discipline area as soon as possible to discuss an appropriate topic, PRIOR to submitting their project proposal for this course.


On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. identify suitable research topics in creative arts, humanities or social sciences
  2. undertake independent research through engaging scholarly approaches that engage with a discipline
  3. demonstrate appropriate communication skills and professional literacy, and report research outcomes.

1. Topics will be determined in consultation with a supervisor from the student’s discipline. Topics will be based on either: a scholarly research report on an established area of study, an actual community and/or artistic project taking place during the semester, or the development of new work through experimental applications of practice. 100.00

  1. Attendance requirements:
    It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them, to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.

    Students must attend and complete the requirements of the Workplace Health and Safety training program for this course where required.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To successfully complete an individual assessment item, a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks .

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4)

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.

  6. Examination information:

    There is no examination in this course, there will be no deferred or supplementary examinations.

  1. Students can expect that questions in assessment items in this course may draw upon knowledge and skills that they can reasonably be expected to have acquired before enrolling in the course. This includes knowledge contained in pre-requisite courses and appropriate communication, information literacy, analytical, critical thinking, problem solving or numeracy skills. Students who do not possess such knowledge and skills should not expect to achieve the same grades as those students who do possess them.

  2. Students are strongly advised to maintain regular contact with their supervisor.

  3. Early in the semester, the student and his/her supervisor must decide on specific objectives for the course. This would typically involve such activities as writing a first draft of the literature review, writing a first draft of the method section, completing data collection, or other research activities as specified by the supervisor.
