Other requisites
Current skills at the level of Queensland Senior Secondary School Studies Maths A or equivalent assumed. This course is substantially equivalent to ENG1500 and MAT1001. Students cannot enrol in MAT1000 if they have successfully completed, or are currently enrolled in ENG1500, MAT1001, MAT1100, ENM1500, MAT1500, MAT1102, ENM1600 or ENM2600.
Rationale
Students entering tertiary studies in many fields require quantitative literacy and expertise in mathematics and problem solving. Building a sound basis for tertiary studies, this course develops fundamental mathematical competencies, and skills in reading, writing and communicating mathematics effectively.
Synopsis
This course develops fundamental mathematical concepts for many fields of study. Topics included are: basic arithmetic, measurement, basic algebra, functions and graphing, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions. Skills are developed in reading, writing and communicating mathematical and quantitative information effectively in a range of settings.
Objectives
On successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 develop and apply recognised processes to examine a number of fundamental mathematical topics essential to further tertiary study in mathematics and other fields
 analyse and solve a range of contextualized problems involving mathematical concepts relevant to this course.
 effectively communicate mathematical concepts and express fundamental mathematical solutions in a variety of forms.

Important assessment information

Attendance requirements:
It is the students' responsibility to participate appropriately in all activities scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of courserelated activities and administration.

Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
To complete each of the assignments satisfactorily, students must obtain at least 50% of the marks available for the assignment.

Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must obtain at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course (i.e. the Primary Hurdle), and have satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised), i.e. the end of semester examination by achieving at least 40% of the weighted marks available for that assessment item.
Supplementary assessment may be offered where a student has undertaken all of the required summative assessment items and has passed the Primary Hurdle but failed to satisfy the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised), or has satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised) but failed to achieve a passing Final Grade by 5% or less of the total weighted Marks.
To be awarded a passing grade for a supplementary assessment item (if applicable), a student must achieve at least 50% of the available marks for the supplementary assessment item as per the Assessment Procedure http://policy.usq.edu.au/documents/14749PL (point 4.4.2).

Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.

Examination information:
A Restricted Examination is an examination where only those materials specified in the examination paper are permitted during the examination. The only materials that candidates may use in the restricted examination for this course are: writing materials (nonelectronic and free from material which could give the student an unfair advantage in the examination); scientific calculators (nongraphical and nonprogrammable); one (1) A4 sheet, written or typed on one or both sides with any material the student wishes to have. Students whose first language is not English, may, take an appropriate unmarked nonelectronic translation dictionary (but not technical dictionary) into the examination. Dictionaries with any handwritten notes will not be permitted. Translation dictionaries will be subject to perusal and may be removed from the candidate's possession until appropriate disciplinary action is completed if found to contain material that could give the candidate an unfair advantage.

Assessment notes

Exam paper presentation: All exam papers should be presented in accurate and clear writing by blue or black pen. Pencil writing is not acceptable. Assignments can be presented using any word processor such as Word or Latex, or can be neatly written by blue or black pen (but not by pencil).
