Rationale

This course provides the student with important music skills that supplement practical music courses. Essential elements in the development of a musician are aural awareness and both a working knowledge of, and practical skills in the techniques of music analysis, writing and performance.

Synopsis

This course provides practical instruction in the use of the vocabulary and language of music to create musical artefacts. It further develops fundamental knowledge, understanding and aural acuity of pitch, melody and rhythm. Succeeding Making Music courses further develop these skills.

Objectives

On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. demonstrate basic level knowledge and understanding of melody and harmony
  2. apply skills and techniques related to melody and harmony construction
  3. apply aural skills, including the ability to observe and analyse melody and harmony in a variety of contexts
  4. work both independently and/or collaboratively to apply knowledge of melody and harmony to the creation of musical artefacts.

    To be assured of receiving a passing grade, a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.

    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.
