This course is intended to assist the student to make a successful transition from student to health practitioner within ethico-legal parameters of the National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse. The course draws upon knowledge from both first and second year courses and extends ethico legal and clinical leadership principles to develop student transition into an autonomous and accountable Registered Nurse role in the health practice environment. Contemporary professional practice mandates that students comprehend their 'scope of practice' in order to practice within its parameters. In this course students are required to critique and clarify professional knowledge and how such knowledge is situated in relation to the philosophical underpinnings of care.
The course content will expand the ethico-legal aspects of nursing practice introduced in previous courses. Concepts include ethical decision making, 'Code of Conduct' and the legal parameters for nurses in clinical practice. Students will consolidate skills in critical thought and autonomous practice through clinical leadership principles that guide decision making and registered accountability in practice environments caring for individuals from birth to death. The formation of professional identity is explored relative to scope of practice, life-long learning and the care and decision making practices of the registered nurse in the health care environment.
On completion of this course students will be able to:
- Critically apply relevant legal and ethical principles to future health care practice situations at the level of a beginning Registered Nurse
- Interpret, analyse and apply the nursing scope of practice in health related scenarios
- Examine clinical leadership principles in nursing practice
- Engage in critical discussion which explores the relationship between professional identity, role conflict and role boundaries
- Interpret, analyse and explain professional formation through linking theoretical concepts of caring to clinical practice environments and lifelong learning.
- Apply exemplary communication in digital technologies and therapeutic relationships working with, and leading inter-professional teams in care decision making practices

It is the students' responsibility to participate appropriately in all activities scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration. Engagement in online discussion forums forms part of the directed study component of this course.
Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
To satisfactorily complete this course students must attempt all assessment items and achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for that item.

Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must attempt all assessment items and achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.
Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the weighted aggregate of the marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.
