Australia holds a unique position in that we have two distinct Indigenous groups - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. The health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians has been documented to be at a significantly lower level compared to their non-Indigenous counterparts. Content in this course focuses on the unique needs of both of these communities and advocates that health professionals adopt a cultural safety approach to healthcare delivery for addressing these complex health and communities' needs.
The purpose of this course is to enable students to recognise historical and current inequalities in the health status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, families, and groups. Students will learn about culturally safe care to gain a better understanding of how to partner and collaborate to meet health needs and improve health outcomes. Particular interest will be given to, a) the inequities that remain in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health status as compared to their non- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander counterparts and, b) the skills and knowledge that nurse's need to develop to work with people from both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. In undertaking this course the student will utilise the principles of Primary Health Care to propose strategies in collaboration with these individuals, groups or communities to enable them to have equal access to affordable, equitable and appropriate health service provision to meet their needs.
Throughout the course and on completion students will be able to:
History and Culture:
Describe the original lifestyle of the first Australians
- Discuss historical events and policies and analyse how these have influenced the health status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of Australia
- Identify the health status of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population over time
- Examine the concept of culture and discuss how the value and belief constructs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people guide their thinking, decision-making processes and actions in the health and illness paradigm
Health and Wellness:
Identify the principles of Primary Health Care and then apply these principles to propose strategies to create and maintain healthy environments within Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services
Understanding self and others:
Examine the values, prejudices, cultural beliefs and behaviours that can affect the delivery of appropriate nursing and healthcare. Students will identify their own potential prejudices, cultural beliefs and behaviours that could affect their nursing practice when caring for Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
- Demonstrate the integration of principles, philosophy and strategies of Primary Health Care into practice when working with clients from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander

- This will be a closed examination. The exam is a multiple choice exam. The total working time for the examination is two hours. The examination date will be available via UConnect when the official examination timetable has been released.
Important assessment information
It is the students' responsibility to participate appropriately in all activities and study all material provided to them, or required to be accessed by them, to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration. Engagement in online discussion forums forms part of the directed study component of this course.
Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
To complete each of the assessment items satisfactorily, students must obtain at least 50% of the marks available for each assessment item.

Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must attempt all assessment items and obtain at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course (i.e. the Primary Hurdle).
Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.

Deferred exam will be held in the next examination period.

Evaluation and benchmarking
