This Masters level course is designed to facilitate synthesis of knowledge from previous studies as the basis for addressing the learning needs of the student, through a learning contract based on an identified area of professional interest to the student.


This course is based on a negotiated learning contract between students and the course leader. The learning contract requires that students draw on their previous learning and identify their current learning needs. The students, in consultation with the course leader will agree upon learning objectives, available resources, learning processes and methods of evaluation.


On successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. develop a learning contract, which identifies own learning objectives, resources, learning processes and method/s of evaluation
  2. achieve a level of knowledge and skills as negotiated in the learning contract
  3. demonstrate appropriate academic and professional communication as demonstrated in the written assignments with competent use of language and literacy, including spelling, grammar, punctuation and bibliographic referencing.

Important assessment information

  1. Attendance requirements:
    There are no attendance requirements for this course. However, it is the students' responsibility to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To complete an assessment item satisfactorily, students must obtain at least 50% of the marks available for that assessment item.

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4)

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course. Where a student has failed to achieve a passing grade by 5% or less of the aggregated weighted marks, the examiner in agreement with the moderator will consider recommending to the Board of Examiners the undertaking of supplementary assessment by the student, if the student has undertaken all of the required summative assessment for the course.

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.

  6. Examination information:
    There is no examination in this course.

  7. Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
    There will be no Deferred or Supplementary examinations in this course.

Assessment notes

  1. The due date for an assignment is the final date by which a student must submit the assignment via electronic submission on the USQ Study Desk. Refer to your Course Study Guide and course website on Study Desk for submission details. Times and dates refer to Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST).

  2. Assessment items must be submitted by electronic submission. The Faculty will NOT accept submission of assignments by facsimile or email or hardcopy. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that their electronic submission is in the correct format and is the final version of the assignment. Resubmission due to error will not be accepted after the due date. Hardcopies or emailed versions will not be accepted.

  3. If requested, students will be required to provide a copy of assignments submitted for assessment purposes. Such copies should be despatched to USQ within 24 hours of receipt of a request to do so.

  4. The examiner may grant an extension of the due date of an assignment in extenuating circumstances.

  5. Students who have undertaken all of the required assessments in a course but who have failed to meet the minimum requirements for a passing grade within the normally prescribed time may be awarded the temporary grade: IM (Incomplete - Make up). An IM grade will only be awarded when, in the opinion of the examiner, a student will be able to meet the minimum requirements for a passing grade after a period of non-directed personal study. Students must have submitted all pieces of assessment and must achieve 45% of the marks available in this course to be awarded supplemental material.

  6. Students who, for medical, family/personal, or employment-related reasons, are unable to complete an assignment or to sit for an examination at the scheduled time may apply to defer an assessment in a course. Such a request must be accompanied by appropriate supporting documentation. One of the following temporary grades may be awarded IDS (Incomplete - Deferred Examination; IDM (Incomplete Deferred Make-up); IDB (Incomplete - Both Deferred Examination and Deferred Make-up).

Other requirements

  1. APA (6th Edition) is the referencing system which is now used in the Master of Nursing. Students should use APA style in their assignments to format details of the information sources they have cited in their work. The USQ library provides advice on how to format information sources using this system.
