Health professionals operate in an evidence-based healthcare system whereby healthcare is delivered to individuals according to the best available research evidence. This course addresses the need for health care professionals to understand research processes and the importance of evidence based practice in order to provide the highest level of safe and effective care and assistance. Health care professionals must also be able to critique evidence in order to provide evidence-based care.
Evidence Based Practice for Healthcare Professionals enables extend their knowledge of research and research processes. This course provides students with an opportunity to examine data collection and data analyses, and appreciate the applicability of research to healthcare professionals. Finally, this course enables student to evaluate and compare research findings to identify best practice/s.
On successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Examine the importance and need to provide evidence-based practice.
- Analyse the levels of evidence available to health care professionals
- Outline the most appropriate research methods and methodologies when undertaking health care research
- Recognise the role and importance of research ethics
- Compare and contrast Qualitative, Quantitative and mixed methods research
- Examine the need for research rigor regarding data collection and data analysis
- Evaluate strategies and mechanisms to report and disseminate research findings

It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities (such as lectures and tutorials) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.
Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
To satisfactorily complete an assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks for that item. Students do not have to satisfactorily complete each assessment item to be awarded a passing grade in this course. Refer to Statement 4 below for the requirements to receive a passing grade in this course.

Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.
Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative items for the course.
NO EXAM: There is no examination in this course.
Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
As there is no examination in this course and there will be no deferred or supplementary examinations.

This includes knowledge contained in pre-requisite courses and appropriate communication, information literacy, analytical, critical thinking, problem solving or numeracy skills. Students who do not possess such knowledge and skills should not expect the same grades as those students who do possess them.
