To be eligible to enrol in this course students must have completed at least two years of their program.

Students who would like to undertake this course as an elective course in their program should discuss it with their Program Coordinator.

Before being able to enrol in this course students must apply for, and be accepted as a member of a student team for one of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) projects listed for the next offer of the course. The examiner of the course will normally put out a call for applications for STEM project teams in the semester prior to the semester the course will be offered.

Rationale

This course enables students studying undergraduate degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and other disciplines to gain valuable experience in collaborating with students and staff from a range of disciplines to tackle a real-world, multi-disciplinary problem. They will also enhance their capabilities in a number of USQ Graduate Skills: Ethical research and enquiry; Problem solving; Academic, professional and digital literacy; Written and oral communication; Interpersonal skills; Team work; Management, planning and organisational skills; Creativity, initiative and enterprise; and Sustainable practice.

The ability to work effectively with people from other disciplines is an important capability for all graduates, and many employers believe it is a critical capability. The course would normally be undertaken as an Elective course by third or fourth year students who will be able to apply their disciplinary knowledge and experience to help complete the STEM project being undertaken by their student team. The number of students who are able to participate in any one year will depend on the number of suitable STEM projects that can sourced from industry and research centres, and the number of STEM staff who are available to facilitate the projects and mentor student teams. For this reason the course will only be offered as an elective.

Synopsis

The aim of this course is to enable students to gain experience in working in multi-disciplinary teams to complete a real world project. The ability to work effectively with people from other disciplines is an important capability for all graduates. Teamwork is one of the USQ Graduate Skills. Students will also have opportunities to enhance their capabilities in other Graduate Skills.

In the semester prior to the offer of the course students will be recruited for each of the positions on a STEM Project Team. This would normally include students from both STEM and other disciplines such as management, public relations and journalism.

At the beginning of the course the student team would develop plans and schedules to complete the project within the nominated period. They would meet weekly and each meeting would be minuted. Each student would keep a journal of the activities undertaken, the hours spent on each activity, and a weekly reflection. These would be reconciled with the Project plan on a weekly basis.

The client (project sponsor) would meet with the team at the beginning of the project, at least once during the project, and at the end of the project when the outcomes are presented by the team members.

Where appropriate student activities will be supported by the provision of one or more workshops which will be led by staff from the relevant Research Centres or industries. The workshop will cover technical topics and project implementation issues such as working in multi-disciplinary teams.

Each Student Team will submit a project report the due date. This will include a report on the activities undertaken by each student (written by the relevant student), including reflections, reconciliations, evaluations etc.

Each Student Team will also give a presentation about their project at a function organised by the STEM Team Project staff.

Objectives

On successful completion of this course students will have:

  1. collaborated effectively in a multi-disciplinary team to complete a STEM project
  2. collaborated with other team members to develop and implement a project plan, a risk management plan, and a project schedule to complete a STEM project
  3. managed personal time and met project deadlines
  4. communicated effectively with students from other disciplines to complete a multi-disciplinary project
  5. reflected on the problem solving strategies and terminology used by students from other disciplines
  6. reflected on their contribution to the project, their achievements, and their learning
  7. contribute to the preparation of the STEM Project report
  8. participated in the presentation of the STEM project story and outcomes to the client and STEM Team Project staff and students
  9. evaluated the project plan and its implementation, and the outcomes of the project.

  1. Attendance requirements:

    Students must attend and complete the requirements of the Workplace Health and Safety training program for this course where required.

    To satisfactorily complete an individual assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks for that item.

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.

    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative items for the course.

  6. Examination information:
    There is no examination in this course.

  7. Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
    There is no examination in this course, there will be no deferred or supplementary examinations.

Assessment notes

  2. If electronic submission is specified for a course assessment, students will be notified of this on the Course Study Desk. The due date for an electronically submitted assessment is the date by which a student must electronically submit the assignment irrespective of holidays. The assignment files must be submitted by 11.55pm on the due date using USQ time (as displayed on the clock on the course home page; that is, Australian Eastern Standard Time).

  3. If hardcopy submission is specified for a course assessment students will be notified of this on the Course Study Desk. The due date for a hardcopy assignment is the date by which a student must submit at USQ or despatch the assignment to USQ irrespective of holidays.
