Pre-requisite: None; however in some cases TPP7111 will need to have been completed prior to enrolment in TPP7123.
A pass in TPP7111 is a prerequisite for students who are then intending to enrol in TPP7123.

Rationale

TPP7123 Communicating at University B responds to the TPP program objectives relating to increasing the literacy skills of people who want to gain entry to tertiary education, successful transition for students who gain access to tertiary programs, and increasing levels of self-esteem and self-confidence in the student's ability to successfully undertake formal study in a higher education program. Effective and appropriate communication is essential for success at university. TPP7123 provides instruction, opportunities for practice, assessment and constructive feedback to enable students to develop the skills, knowledge and attributes to enable them to successfully communicate at university.

Synopsis

TPP7123 Communicating at University B introduces, teaches, models and provides opportunities for practice and assessment in academic communication skills at a more advanced level than TPP7111 Communicating at University A.

Students will learn about finding, understanding and using information effectively; communicating ideas competently orally and in writing, and the standards of logic, evidence and ethical use of information required for first year university study. Through the process of researching for, planning and writing an academic essay, students will develop and practise skills in effective reading, finding information, organising ideas to express a clear argument, writing effective academic paragraphs and referencing.

On successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. Competently find, meaningfully comprehend, use, and engage critically with information resources, including information communication technology resources, to match the ethical and academic expectations of the academic community.
  2. Competently communicate ideas using the standard of logic and evidence required for first year university studies at the bachelor level.

Important assessment information

  1. Attendance requirements:
    There are no attendance requirements for this course. However, it is the students' responsibility to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To satisfactorily complete an individual assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks for that item. (Depending upon the requirements in Statement 4 below, students may not have to satisfactorily complete each assessment item to receive a passing grade in this course.)

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure http://policy.usq.edu.au/documents.php?id=14749PL (point 4.2.4)

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must obtain at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course (i.e. the Primary Hurdle), and have satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised), i.e. the end of semester examination by achieving at least 40% of the marks available for that assessment item.
    Supplementary assessment may be offered where a student has undertaken all of the required summative assessment items and has passed the Primary Hurdle but failed to satisfy the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised), or has satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised) but failed to achieve a passing Final Grade by 5% or less of the total weighted Marks.
    To be awarded a passing grade for a supplementary assessment item (if applicable), a student must achieve at least 50% of the available marks for the supplementary assessment item as per the Assessment Procedure http://policy.usq.edu.au/documents/14749PL (point 4.4.2).

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative items for the course.

  6. Examination information:
    RESTRICTED: Candidates are allowed access only to specific materials during a Restricted Examination. The only materials that candidates may use in the restricted examination for this course are:
    • Writing materials (non-electronic and free from material which could give the student an unfair advantage in the examination);
    • Students may take an appropriate unmarked non electronic English dictionary or English translation dictionary (but not technical dictionary) into the examination.
    • Dictionaries with any handwritten notes will not be permitted. Dictionaries will be subject to perusal and may be removed from the candidate’s possession until appropriate disciplinary action is completed if found to contain material that could give the candidate an unfair advantage.

  7. Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
    Any Deferred or Supplementary examinations for this course will be held during the next examination period.

Assessment notes

  1. Referencing in assignments must comply with the Harvard (AGPS) referencing system. This system should be used by students to format details of the information sources they have cited in their work. Evaluation and benchmarking
