Workplace-based learning programs are designed to enable students to draw upon their work and life experiences to demonstrate their achievement of many required attributes and capabilities. This course must be taken during the first or second semester of a program in workplace-based learning. It will enable students to consider their individual program objectives including those concerned with improvements within their field of employment by the development of an individualized learning plan informed by the completed learning portfolio from course WBL8000.


This course will enable the student to identify their program objectives and will focus on the development of a Learning Plan, based on their Learning Portfolio, which will outline the complementary studies and workplace-based project(s) to be taken in order to fulfil these objectives. Discussion within the workplace will help to ascertain the time available to undertake the workplace-based project(s) within normal working time. The workplace-based project(s) will be outlined, an appropriate unit size for each project will be determined and methods of demonstrating contextualized learning experiences and augmented expertise will be identified. Students will also show how the project(s) may benefit the workplace. They will also show how they will explore and communicate the relevance of literature related to specific fields of interest. It is expected that there will be considerable negotiation between the student and the USQ Adviser to ensure that the Learning Plan will clearly outline a cohesive, relevant learning pathway.


On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. identify the student's program learning objectives
  2. outline a workplace-based project or projects that may be of benefit to the workplace
  3. identify material required to support workplace-based projects and professional learning objectives
  4. contextualise the development of learning experiences and expertise with regard to professional standards and expectations
  5. explore and communicate the relevance of literature to specific fields of interest
  6. demonstrate a high level of communication skill
  7. be approved by the program coordinator.

    Students must attend and complete the requirements of the Workplace Health and Safety training program for this course where required.

    External and Online:
    There are no attendance requirements for this course. However, it is the students’ responsibility to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To satisfactorily complete an individual assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks.

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure (point 4.2.4)

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    As P is the only passing grade available for this course, all students who are qualified for a passing grade will be given a grade of P. Other students will be given either a Failing grade or an Incomplete grade.

  6. Examination information:
