Practice courses seek to develop basic competencies and attributes commensurate with the intuitive and professional skills sought in engineering graduates. This course provides a broad introduction to the practical aspects of geology and geomechanics and focuses on the development of analytical, manual, diagnostic, communication and group interaction skills.
The course includes practice modules covering aspects of Geology and Geomechanics. Practice requirements for each module include laboratory work in a team environment, field excursions and the preparation of individual reports on these practice activities. The geological field excursion provides the student with specialised instruction on the identification and the engineering significance of geological features. Students will be required to carry out soil tests to Australian standards to gauge various engineering properties of soils.
This course contains a mandatory residential school for external students and mandatory on-campus laboratories or practical classes for on-campus students.
The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course. On completion of this course students will be able to:
- identify the engineering significance of common geological structures and discuss the implication of weathering and landform development;
- identify a range of minerals and rocks and applying their properties to resolve engineering examples and problems;
- measure basic engineering properties of soils using standard testing procedures;
- analyse and present experimental data to a suitable engineering standard, communicating results and conclusions effectively as a team through a written report;
- demonstrate an appreciation of appropriate safety procedures and workplace health and safety requirements;
- work effectively as a member and/or leader of a team, participating in complex tasks, and supporting others in achievement of team goals.

Important assessment information
External students must attend the mandatory residential school and on-campus students must attend the mandatory on-campus laboratories or practical classes. It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities (such as lectures, tutorials, laboratories and practical work) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration. Students should also plan to ensure their availability to attend the geology field trip. External students will undertake the geology field trip as part of the mandatory residential school.
Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
To satisfactorily complete each assessment item students must achieve a mark of 1 out of 1 for that assessment item.

Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade students must attend and participate in the mandatory residential school and achieve a mark of 1 out of 1 for each assessment item.
Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
As P is the only passing grade available for this course, all students who are qualified for a passing grade, under the requirements in 4 above, will be given a grade of P. Other students will be given either a Failing grade or an Incomplete grade.
There is no examination in this course.
