Rationale

The second aim of the UNESCO Road Map for Arts Education (2006) affirms that experiences in arts education are the foundation for a balanced creative, cognitive, emotional, aesthetic and social approach for the development of people from birth to old age. The skills and expertise to provide high quality experiences for learners in both the conception and delivery of arts activities and awareness of their powerful ability to engage learners in a range of content areas is a central feature of this course. This course provides important knowledge, skills and understanding for pre-service teachers to maximise the effectiveness of the arts through integration with one another and also their ability to enhance learning in other key learning areas in the Australian Curriculum.

Synopsis

Building upon the foundation established in the first arts course this course encourages further in-depth exploration of the five arts subjects: Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music and Visual Arts and provides pre-service teachers with the skills to both teach the Arts and to also understand how to integrate arts-based approaches to assist teaching in key learning areas of the Australian Curriculum such as: English, Mathematics, Humanities and Social Sciences, Technologies, Health and Physical Education and Languages. This course will enable pre-service teachers to teach with, about, in and through the arts and understand and utilise important knowledge relevant to arts integration.

Objectives

The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course in accordance with the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership’s (AITSL) Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST). On successful completion of this course pre-service teachers should be able to:

  1. use prior knowledge and demonstrate understanding of strategies to teach content of the five Arts forms and meet the learning needs (APST 2.1);
  2. acknowledge and apply strategies to support inclusive student participation and engagement (APST 4.1);
  3. determine and apply strategies to plan for and implement effective arts-based methods to provide curriculum learning opportunities (APST 3.3);
  4. use assessment strategies appropriate for the Arts including formative and summative approaches to assess student learning (APST 5.1);
  5. use relevant and appropriate sources for teaching the Arts (APST 6.2);
  6. access and implement specialised arts expertise including research, associations and organisations, to enhance engagement with the arts in the school community (APST 7.4).

    To satisfactorily complete an individual assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks for that item.

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.

    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative items for the course.

  6. Examination information:

Assessment notes

  1. Referencing in assignments must comply with the APA referencing system. This system should be used by students to format details of the information sources they have cited in their work.   2. Students are required to demonstrate competence in and appropriate use of academic language and literacy, including spelling, grammar, punctuation, and referencing in all assessment responses. Marks allocated to the aforementioned criteria will be specified in the criteria for assessment of all assessment items.

  3. Students are required to submit ALL assignments to evidence meeting or exceeding the mandatory requirements of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APSTs).

Evaluation and benchmarking

In meeting the University’s aims to establish quality learning and teaching for all programs, this course monitors and ensures quality assurance and improvements in at least two ways. This course:

  2. Queensland College of Teachers
  3. Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) of the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL).

  1. Participation: Students can expect it will be necessary to participate in and contribute to a range of learning opportunities in this course including online study activities, lectures, tutorials, seminar presentations, group discussions and self-directed study activities in order to apply the coursework that will enable quality assessment tasks to be submitted as evidence of professional development.
