With the rollout of the Australian Curriculum and the introduction of external pre-registration testing, it is imperative that all pre-service educators have practical knowledge of mathematics. Mathematics is a fascinating and indispensable discipline in modern society. It gives the opportunity for pre-service educators to develop their logic and reasoning skills that can be applied to many other areas of interest. To face future challenges in producing a highly skilled Australian workforce, pre-service primary must have a broad understanding up to, and including, Year 6 mathematics.
This course focuses on the mathematical content knowledge required by pre-service educators from Prep to Year 6. The Australian Curriculum strands: Number and Algebra; Measurement and Geometry; and Probability & Statistics are addressed. The course would also be of value to pre-service educators who feel they do not have an appropriate level of mathematical content knowledge to effectively teach the Australian Mathematics Curriculum to Year 6.
The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course in accordance with the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership’s (AITSL) Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST). On successful completion of this course pre-service educators should be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of the concepts, skills and processes associated with the number, algebra, measurement, geometry and probability and statistics curriculum strands and sub-strands (APST 2.1, 2.2);
- demonstrate a proficient understanding of mathematics content knowledge P-7 (APST 2.1, 2.2);
- describe and apply appropriate higher order thinking and problem solving strategies to improve pre-service educators mathematical learning P-7 (APST 2.1, 2.2, 2.5, 3.1, 3.4, 5.1);
- draw on curriculum documentation to plan a sequence of open-ended mathematical challenges to extend P-7 learning (APST 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.5, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4);
- work confidently with current mathematics syllabus documentation in Years P-7 (APST 2.3, 2.6, 3.2);
- demonstrate competence in, and appropriate use of language and literacy, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation and referencing (APST 2.5, 3.5).

|3.||Geometry: this strand involves the properties of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional space and shapes, location and transformation, and geometric reasoning and, where each topic is represented in the Australian Curriculum P-7||20.00|
|4.||Probability and statistics: involves chance, mathematical treatment of data and interpretation of the data, and where each topic is represented in the Australian Curriculum P-7||20.00|
|5.||Measurement: this strand involves properties of the real-world that can be measured, the units used to measure them and the process of measurement and, where each topic is represented in the Australian Curriculum P-7||20.00|

Important assessment information
There are no attendance requirements for this course. However, it is the students’ responsibility to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.
Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
To satisfactorily complete an individual assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks for that item.

Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.
Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative items for the course.
This is a restricted examination. The only materials that candidates may use in the examination for this course are:
- writing materials. These must be non-electronic and free from materials which could give the student an unfair advantage in the examination.
- a calculator which cannot hold textual information (students must indicate on their examination paper the make and model of any calculator(s) they use during the examination.

- Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) of the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL).
Participation: Students can expect it will be necessary to participate in and contribute to a range of learning opportunities in this course including online study activities, lectures, tutorials, seminar presentations, group discussions and self-directed study activities in order to apply the coursework that will enable quality assessment tasks to be submitted as evidence of professional development.
