Consideration must be given to the ongoing effects of colonization on students' lives and how this impacts access to education. Many students need assistance to recognise themselves as learners and claim their voice within the academy. Students need to demonstrate certain skills and attributes to be considered for acceptance into undergraduate study. The development of such skills promotes self-confidence and the ability to undertake life-long learning and adds to an individual’s ability to contribute effectively in important forums relevant to community. These skills and attributes are addressed by the IHEP core courses. This course is the first of three preliminary courses that scaffold students’ learning to ensure later success in the IHEP core courses.
This course focuses on oracy as a pathway to literacy, structured text patterns of speech and written text and the correlation between western and First Nations educational systems. Students will develop an understanding of written and spoken text patterns and apply the learned principles in a Introduction to Self and a short text presentation. This course celebrates the knowledge that students bring with them and facilitates self-identification as a scholar.
On successful completion of this course, students should be able to:
- recognise and discuss the unique position of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students within the university
- meet the required academic communication criteria
- apply academic conventions at a beginning level
- apply community knowledge and learning in an academic context.

Important assessment information
This course requires attendance at a residential school. It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities (such as lectures, tutorials, laboratories and practical work) scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.
Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
To satisfactorily complete an individual assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks.

Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.
Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.
There is no examination in this course.
