This course introduces participants to a range of counselling and therapeutic models which guide intervention approaches in effecting behavioural, cognitive and affective change. In addition, participants will examine issues related to the professional practice of counselling.
This course is designed to introduce the student to the theory and issues involved in counselling. Various models of counselling and behaviour change that constitute the field of counselling psychology will be examined along with an introduction to the major theories and their related techniques and interventions.
On completion of this course students will be able to:
- demonstrate a critical awareness of models of counselling and therapeutic change;
- demonstrate a basic understanding of the practice of counselling individuals;
- search, analyse, and synthesise the literature regarding counselling modalities. The student can recognise gaps in the literature and highlights the need for further development;
- demonstrate a basic understanding of the ethical principles and theories underlying the practice of counselling individuals;
- work in groups to produce a group oral presentation.

- Group oral presentations will be conducted in tutorials from the due date onwards for on-campus students. Online students will submit their video-recorded presentations by the due date.

It is the students' responsibility to participate actively in all classes or recordings scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.
Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
To be assured of a pass in this course, students must attempt all pieces of assessment and must achieve an overall mark of at least 50%.

Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must obtain at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course. Supplementary assessment may be offered where a student has undertaken all of the required summative assessment items but failed to achieve a passing Final Grade by 5% or less of the total weighted Marks.
To be awarded a passing grade for a supplementary assessment item (if applicable), a student must achieve at least 50% of the available marks for the supplementary assessment item as per the Assessment Procedure http://policy.usq.edu.au/documents/14749PL (point 4.4.2).
Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.

This course requires electronic submission of assessment. The due date for an electronically submitted assessment is the date by which a student must electronically submit the assignment irrespective of holidays. The assignment files must be submitted by 11.55pm on the due date using USQ time (as displayed on the clock on the course home page; that is, Australian Eastern Standard Time).
Students need to request an extension in advance of the due date from the Examiner. Granting of an Assignment extension is considered a significant concession. See http://policy.usq.edu.au/documents.php?id=131150PL (point 4.1.5) if you think you have grounds for an extension. Applications for extensions must be made in writing to the Course Examiner together with accompanying documentation as specified in the Assessment of Compassionate and Compelling Circumstances Procedure. In regards to appropriate documentation, students should refer to the relevant policy guidelines using the link above (see point 4.3). No assignment will be accepted after marked copies have been returned to students. Assignments submitted after the due date, without an extension approved by the Examiner, will attract penalties as in Statement 3 above. Extensions will usually not be granted for workload reasons unless it can be shown that your work commitments prior to the due date for the assignment were above and beyond your normal duties or responsibilities. In such cases, a letter from your employer would be required.
Reliable access to the internet is a requirement of this course as the course contains electronic assessment and submission elements. In order to avoid internet issues, on-campus students should upload their assignments electronically using the on-campus computer laboratories. Online students who knowingly do not have reliable access to the internet should actively seek alternative internet access (e.g., Internet cafes, local libraries, or work places) for assessment submission. Online students are able to use the on-campus student computer laboratories once access has been enabled. To be granted access, online students need to contact ICT and ask to have a student account enabled so that they can work on-campus. This needs to be requested at least one week before access is required.
