Rationale

This course will explore the pathophysiology, treatment, and clinical exercise interventions for a range of special populations. Special populations include people with chronic clinical conditions, multi-trauma, or complex co-morbidities, people with disabilities, individuals from different races, cultures, and minority groups, as well as children and the elderly. The course will build upon knowledge and practical skills established in earlier courses including SES3101, SES3231 and SES4101 to develop clinical knowledge and skills taught and assessed during this course that are requirements of the professional accreditation set down by the professional body, Exercise and Sports Science Australia, as standards for an Accredited Exercise Physiologist.

Synopsis

The purpose of this course is for students to acquire appropriate knowledge and skills important for physiology and functional movement assessment, monitoring, and prescription of exercise for people with chronic clinical conditions, multi-trauma, or complex co-morbidities, people with disabilities, individuals from different races, cultures, and minority groups, as well as children and the elderly. Evidence-based clinical practice will be modeled and applied.

This course contains a mandatory residential school at the Ipswich campus for external students and mandatory on-campus practical sessions for on-campus students.

Objectives

On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. Describe and analyse the epidemiology, aetiology and pathophysiology of various special populations.
  2. Identify and justify the role of exercise intervention as part of an overall lifestyle modification in modifying physiological and pathophysiological processes in special need individuals.
  3. Assess, design, prescribe and implement appropriately exercise capacity in special populations.
  4. Interpret and evaluate the impact of exercise intervention prescription and the effect of medications on exercise intervention capacity in special need individuals.
  5. Investigate and apply relevant research in clinical exercise physiology practice.

    External students must attend the mandatory residential school and on-campus students must attend the mandatory on-campus practical sessions. It is the students' responsibility to attend and participate appropriately in all activities scheduled for them, and to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    Due to COVID-19 the requirements for S2 2020 are:
    To satisfactorily complete an individual assessment item a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks for that item.

    Requirements after S2 2020:
    To satisfactorily complete the practical test and online quiz assessment items a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks for that item. To satisfactorily complete the exam a student must achieve at least 40% of the marks for that item.

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    Due to COVID-19 the requirements for S2 2020 are:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.

    Requirements after S2 2020:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must obtain at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course (i.e. the Primary Hurdle), must have satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Proficiency), i.e. the practical test 1 by achieving at least 50% of the marks available for that assessment item, and must have satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Supervised), i.e. the end of semester examination by achieving at least 40% of the marks available for that assessment item.

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative items for the course.

  6. Examination information:
    Due to COVID-19 the requirements for S2 2020 are:
    An Open Examination is one in which candidates may have access to any printed or written material and a calculator during the examination.

    Requirements after S2 2020:
    RESTRICTED: Candidates are allowed access only to specific materials during a Restricted Examination. The only materials that candidates may use in the restricted examination for this course are:
    a. writing materials (non-electronic and free from material which could give the student an unfair advantage in the examination);
    b. calculators which cannot hold textual information
    c. Students whose first language is not English may take an appropriate unmarked non electronic translation dictionary (but not technical dictionary) into the examination.
    d. Dictionaries with any handwritten notes will not be permitted. Translation dictionaries will be subject to perusal and may be removed from the candidate's possession until appropriate disciplinary action is completed if found to contain material that could give the candidate an unfair advantage.

o professional accreditation standards of the Exercise and Sports Science Australia, National University Course Accreditation Program, clinical exercise physiology.

  2. Students can expect that questions in assessment items in this course may draw upon knowledge and skills that they can reasonably be expected to have acquired before enrolling in this course. This includes knowledge contained in pre-requisite courses and appropriate communication, information literacy, analytical, critical thinking, problem solving or numeracy skills. Students who do not possess such knowledge and skills should not expect the same grades as those students who do possess them.

  3. Students undertaking this course in external mode will be required to attend a residential school at the Ipswich campus to completed practical aspects related to the course. Students can locate the dates and residential schools via the University website. This will involve 21 hours of necessary practical work over a three day time period to successfully complete the course.
