Students will require access to e-mail and have internet access to UConnect for this course. Students are required to attend a mandatory on campus residential school held during the Semester.

Rationale

The ability to use information and to communicate effectively and appropriately underpin successful study in all academic disciplines. This course focuses on the development of the skills, knowledge and attributes necessary to use language and data to understand, explore, solve problems, express arguments and reflect. It aims to develop the foundational academic literacies and numeracy necessary to prepare students for entry into undergraduate study.

Synopsis

Students will engage in an integrated, collaborative academic research project. Through the investigation of a current social issue, they will develop and practice using the academic literacies required to locate, interpret, analyse and critically evaluate a wide range of information. Students will develop the numeracy skills to use quantitative data effectively. They will have the opportunity to work both independently and collaboratively to produce a range of texts suitable for a tertiary environment. This course contains a mandatory residential school.

Objectives

On successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. Use a variety of media to locate, interpret, analyse and critically evaluate information in a range of genres and modes.
  2. Generate an academic argument.
  3. Interpret, analyse, evaluate and use quantitative data to support an academic argument.
  4. Communicate and collaborate in a university environment to produce desired outcomes.
  5. Understand and use a wide range of textual features in a range of communication modes and genres.

Important assessment information

  1. Attendance requirements:
    It is the students' responsibility to study all material provided to them or required to be accessed by them to maximise their chance of meeting the objectives of the course and to be informed of course-related activities and administration.
    Students must attend the mandatory residential school workshops scheduled for this course.

  2. Requirements for students to complete each assessment item satisfactorily:
    To complete the residential school attendance and participation satisfactorily students must achieve 100% (mark of 1) for the item. To satisfactorily complete the remaining assessment items a student must achieve at least 50% of the marks for that item.

  3. Penalties for late submission of required work:
    Students should refer to the Assessment Procedure http://policy.usq.edu.au/documents.php?id=14749PL (point 4.2.4).

  4. Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
    To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must obtain at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course (i.e. the Primary Hurdle), and must have satisfied the Secondary Hurdle (Proficiency), i.e. a student must receive 100% (one mark) for attendance and participation at the scheduled residential school.

  5. Method used to combine assessment results to attain final grade:
    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative items for the course.

  6. Examination information:
    There is no examination in this course.

  7. Examination period when Deferred/Supplementary examinations will be held:
    Not applicable.

Assessment notes

  1. Referencing in assignments must comply with the Harvard (AGPS) referencing system. Evaluation and benchmarking
